Henscratch Farms Will Be Sold to the Last and Highest Bidder
Johanne Lauchman owner of Henscratch Farms Vineyard & Winery announced Wednesday that she has placed the Lake Placid landmark in the hands of a marketing and auction firm from Bartow, FL to be sold on May 31, 2008 to the last and highest bidder. . The decision came on the heels of an award winning season for the wines produced on the farm. In February Henscratch received medals for both "BEST FLORIDA RED" and "BEST FLORIDA WHITE" at the International Wine and Grape Juice Competition in Tampa, and then claimed the "BEST OF SHOW" title for their Country White. It was the first time in the history of the competition that a southern native scuppernong was awarded that status, or that the same winery claimed both red and white titles.
Lauchman planted 10 acres of muscadine and scuppernong grapes on her 30 acre farm in 1999 after attending a grower's workshop co-sponsored by the Highlands Grape Growers Association and the county's Agriculture Extension Service. The country store and winery are in their 5th season. The Henscratch property is one of fourteen wineries in the state operating under the Certified Florida Farm Wineries Program. In her service to the industry she served as President of the Highlands Grape Growers for four years, vice president of The Florida Grape Growers and as an annual presenter at Ag-Venture, a third grade education program. She hopes to still serve in a marketing capacity with the state association.
"I have other things I'd like to do with my time and my resources" said Lauchman. " My husband retired 18 months ago, and would like me to do the same, so I'm taking my chips off the table. I've always been a start up gal. This is my fourth business. I don't believe I'll be at a loss for projects or employment, but don't tell my husband!"
According to the National Auctioneers Association (NAA) the purpose of an auction is to bring informed and motivated buyers to contract at the highest and best dollar value for their property. Auctions are commonplace throughout the country in the agricultural and commercial arenas. A live auction provides a seller an effective and efficient means of selling real estate. An auction is, in fact, the most fair and accurate determination of value, regardless of property type. The seller knows on what day his property will be sold, and under what set of terms & conditions. Based on the principle of the time-value of money, an auction will usually net a greater return on the investment for the seller when compared to a traditional listing & subsequent sale. A dollar realized today is worth more than if acquired on a future date. WHEN THE GAVEL FALLS, IT\'S BOTH BUYERS AND SELLERS WHO WIN AT AUCTIONS.
Growing public acceptance and enthusiasm for the benefits to both the buyer and the seller at live auction is a leading factor in the reported 5.3 % industry growth in 2007 translating into $ 270 billion in goods and services trading ownership. Automobile auctions are the largest segment of the auction industry with over $87.3 billion in vehicles sold in 2007, followed by agribusiness real estate, valued at $25.9 billion. The auction method of marketing is becoming more prevalent in the sale of residential real estate as well. Sales rose 10.1 % in 2007 to reach $16.9 billion. Other categories typically exchanged in the live auction arena include art & antiques, machinery, and charity auctions.
